Families with dogs know that dogs and children are natural companions. When you are working with your dogs to teach them good manners, it’s important that the whole family be involved. You may think that preschool children are too young, but these great videos will show you otherwise.
Here’s a video of Maggie at age 3 working with Shandy in the yard, practicing “down” while getting some distance.
And here’s one of Maggie putting Shandy in a down-stay while she gets a snack from the cabinet. Since the cabinet is low, Shandy always used to stick her nose in there while the kids were getting snacks (which is all the time!) So we told the kids they had to put her in a down-stay while they got their snacks & then they could release her. She doesn’t even try to get into the cabinet while it’s open anymore, but it was great practice when we were doing it all the time!
